February 19th: Nothing can Separate Us from God’s Love

Synopsis: In our passage for Sunday, Jacob is seen running in fear from his brother Esau.  Jacob is also running from his sin before God.  If you recall, Jacob, the younger twin brother of the oldest Esau, was promised the birthright from God.  God was going to make Jacob greater than Esau; God promised him that.  Rather than wait for God to make that happen, Esau conspired with his mother Rebekah to steal the birthright.

Once Esau found out that Jacob had stolen his birthright, he was angry and wanted revenge.  So Jacob followed the command of his father and mother and left them for his Uncle’s land.  On the surface he is fleeing, his brother, but in reality, he is attempting to flee from his sin. 

This leads to the question; how do we respond when we sin?  How do we see God in our sin?

John the Testifier – Sunday, February 12

Synopsis: This Sunday we will look at two prophecies about the first witness to Jesus, and how their words caused some of the religious establishment to have questions on John’s identity.  Then we will hear the testimony of the first two witnesses, John the Testifier and Andrew. 

We will look at how John used baptism to explain who Jesus is.  Baptism wasn’t new, but the thought that all people would need to be baptized, even Jewish people was very new.

Synopsis: Proverbs 17:17 states about friendship, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother and sister is born for adversity.”  Another great definition of friendship I’ve read or heard was, “A friend is one that comes, when everyone else goes.”  Both of those statements describe friendship as an action, not just a thought. 

In chapters 14 and 15 of the Gospel of John, Jesus calls His disciples friends.  He does this to make it clear that the disciples are not servants, rather they know all about the master and His will and therefore are friends rather than servants.  This Sunday we will look at what it means to be a friend according to Scripture.

Synopsis: Daniel grew up with parents and a Jewish community that taught him in the ways of the Lord; as did Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.  They knew what made them God’s children; what identified them as being Children of God.  They knew what it took to be righteous before God and most importantly they knew who God is, the one true God and they sought to worship him in all they did.  Then one day; the four faithful followers from Judah had their world turned upside down. 

We’ll look Sunday at what makes up our identity as Christians and how important it is to keep that identity.

College Scholarship Application 2023-24

Community Church Scholarship Application for Educational Assistance

Guidelines: 

* Applicants must have grown up or currently reside in Mason County, Michigan.

* Applicants must plan to attend a two (2)-year community college, a four (4)-year college or university, or an accredited vocational or trade school.

* Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the college, not the student. The scholarship funds will be issued to the college or university upon receiving a certificate of enrollment for the fall semester, which includes the Student ID number and Financial Aid Office address.

* Applications must be received by Community Church no later than Monday, April 3rd, 2023.  Late applications will not be accepted.

Mail one copy of a completed application package to:

Applications can also be scanned and emailed to Co**************@gm***.com . The church secretary will acknowledge receipt of scholarship applications.

The applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by the Community Church’s Scholarship Committee.  The scholarships will be awarded in June of 2023.  Submission of this application also gives permission to make the applicant’s name and scholarship type public.

Students who are qualified can receive an application:

•     Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the church office to request an application – or –

•     Email the church to receive a PDF file that can be printed out.

Synopsis: Our passage from Hebrews Sunday tells us that, “faith is the confidence in what we hope for and the assurance about what we do not see.”  Trust is rooted and found in this faith and knowledge of God.  We have faith and trust in God because what we know about the truth of His Word. 

Faith and trust are found in not only hearing and believing, but in action and obedience to God’s Word. We will look at a few examples today of just that.

Sunday, January 8: Jesus’ Baptism and Its Meaning for Us

Synopsis: This Sunday we move from the season of Advent and Christmas and on to the season of Epiphany.  Epiphany being defined as the sudden understanding of something; in this case the revealing of Jesus, the Messiah, not just to the Jewish people, but to the Gentiles as well.  One of our lectionary passages details Jesus’ baptism, another the prophecy of that baptism, and a third detailing Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.  So, the question, what does this all mean to us, and more importantly, how should Jesus’ baptism, life, death, and resurrection impact our lives?
